Meet the Scofield Team

Jay Bear - Founder and CEO
Jay and a partner founded the Scofield Timber Company in 1973 when they realized that the responsible harvesting of timber could provide an important source of revenue for Atlanta developers who were holding property for development or resale. Since then, Jay has developed a sizeable following in the forestry business, as well as in other related land services, and the company is now a highly respected leader in the timber industry. Jay has a special interest in preserving the natural aesthetics and health of the environment and is well known in forestry circles for his expertise in thinning timber on expensive and aesthetically sensitive property.
Jay has been a guest speaker at Clemson University, University of Georgia, and other institutions, teaching students on responsible timber harvesting methods. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and a former Army officer and paratrooper. He also attended Tulane University and Georgia Tech.
A native of Mobile, AL, Jay is an avid golfer and an amateur meteorologist. He was an active mountaineer, having climbed a number of the "Fourteeners" (over 14,000 feet) in Colorado, as well as several others in California and Wyoming. Jay has ambitions of visiting Antarctica and one of the base camps on Mount Everest.

    Scofield Core Loggers

Marty Evans - Logger

Like many loggers, Marty Evans' love of the outdoors first attracted him to the logging industry. And, as a third generation logger, he was exposed to the business when he was just 16 years old.

Marty owns and operates Evans Logging Company, Inc., and has worked with Scofield since 1999. Prior to that, he was an independent logging contractor, buying and selling his own timber. Marty and his crews are particularly skilled at thinning large and complicated tracts that eventually will be developed.

Marty is a Master Timber Harvester and is already teaching his teenage son the tools of the trade, who will one day be the fourth generation logger in the Evans family.

Stacy McClure - Logger

Stacy McClure has worked with Scofield since 1999 and has been making a name for himself in the logging industry since the late 1980s.

As a third-generation logger, Stacy learned the logging business from his father, who owned and operated McClure Logging Company.   When his father decided to retire, Stacy bought the business and has been expanding its capabilities ever since.

Stacy and his crew are highly regarded for their expertise in mountain logging, which has become increasingly necessary as more mountain areas are being developed. Stacy is a Master Timber Harvester as well as an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He says the most rewarding part of his job is being able to earn a living while being outdoors.

Gary Church, of HGC Forest Resources, is a fourth-generation logger. He graduated from the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forest Resources in 1994 and is a certified Master Timber Harvester. He also is a registered Forester in Georgia.

After a two-year tour with The Joint Force Headquarters Inspector Generals office, Gary now serves as the 878th assigned as the Battalion Operation Officer.

Gary is a great credit to Scofield and the forestry industry. He has been a volunteer for Project Learning Tree for almost 10 years and is particularly skilled at explaining the harvesting process to the landowner and other interested parties.

Michael specializes in thinning timber and says the best part about his work is meeting with new landowners and helping to transform their land into aesthetically pleasing property. He is a certified Master Timber Harvester and is Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) certified. Michael lives in Palmetto, GA.
